The first electric vehicle made by Opel.
In the autumn of 2011, the Opel Ampera, a groundbreaking electric vehicle with an extended range, went on sale, establishing a completely new segment in the European automotive market.
Its innovative Voltec powertrain allowed for purely electric driving for a significant range, after which a petrol engine would act as a generator to extend its journey, alleviating range anxiety.
The Ampera's styling was distinctive, setting it apart from other Opel models with its boomerang shaped headlights and aerodynamic profile.
Inside, the cabin featured a modern, high tech design with touch sensitive controls, giving it a futuristic feel.
While officially a four seater due to the T-shaped battery pack running through the center, it offered reasonable passenger and luggage space for its class.
The Ampera was equipped with a 111 kW (150 hp) electric motor producing a substantial 370 Nm of torque, allowing for brisk acceleration.
Its 16 kWh lithium ion battery provided an electric only range of around 40 to 80 kilometers.
Once depleted, the 1.4 liter petrol engine would engage to generate electricity, extending the total range to over 500 kilometers.
This unique system allowed for efficient urban commuting on electric power and the flexibility for longer journeys without the need for frequent charging stops.
